DIY Backyard Playgrounds

Posted by Joe Peyton on 2nd Mar 2015

It can be hard finding the time to take your kids to the local park with the busy schedule most people live. If you are looking to find a way for your kids to be active and spend more time outside, why not turn your backyard into a fun environment for them? Here are some ideas to inspire you to turn your backyard into a fun area for your kids to play!

Climbing Walls

A climbing wall will bring out the daring spirit of your children. Try to avoid building your tower too tall to prevent any serious injuries. Supervision is recommended when children are climbing. If you don't wish to build the wall yourself, you can purchase pre-built walls here: http://www.ssww.com/. A bit of work to set up, but once your child reaches the top, they will feel like they can accomplish anything!

Tree House

Bring out the little adventurer in your child by giving them a spacious headquarters in the clouds to daydream and play. A tree house is the perfect way to do this. Not all trees branch off as low to the ground as the one in the picture above, and you certainly don't want a tree house 50 feet off the ground. If you've got the perfect tree in your backyard then bust out the lumber, otherwise you may want to pass on this. Remember, your child's safety is number 1 concern!

Tire Swings

BuySwings.com sells commercial and residential tire swings, but there's nothing wrong with using a good ol' fashioned car tire to get the job done. If you decide to use a standard car tire, either purchase new or make sure the used tire has been properly cleaned to avoid stains to clothes and unwanted road debris all over your children's hands.

Swing Seats

A swing seat is the most popular playground accessory that can be found in the backyard of homes. Swing seats can either be mounted to a sturdy tree branch, or a full swing set can be purchased.

Zip-Lines

There's no need to have a zip line 20 feet off the ground. Mount your zip line high enough for your kids to just barely glide off the ground. The end of the zip line should be high enough so they can dismount on to their feet. A ladder or step area may be required at the starting point so your kids can reach the handle bar.

Chalkboard Walls

If you aren't keen to the idea of your children drawing on your driveway like they are professional graffiti artists, then a chalkboard wall is a good investment. The best part is when it needs to be cleaned, your garden hose will make washing the board much easier!
